SONiC Lite and Edgecore ECS5550: A Versatile Solution for High-Traffic Network Environments

PLVision, a networking software product development company, in partnership with Edgecore Networks has expanded the SONiC Lite Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) to include the ECS5550 series switches, powered by the Marvell Aldrin2 chipset. Within this collaboration, the ECS5550-54X and ECS5550-30X models now support SONiC Lite. The solution enables a wide range of use cases – carrier/enterprise aggregation, top-of-rack roles in small data centers, campus access, fiber-to-the-building (FTTB) for ISPs, and multi-dwelling unit (MDU) connectivity – making it adaptable to diverse networking environments and bringing more efficient connectivity.  

SONiC Lite, an enterprise distribution by PLVision, leverages Community SONiC as its baseline to support a broader range of platforms and empower organizations with regular updates, security patches, and ongoing feature development. Extending SONiC Lite to the aggregation layer streamlines network deployment by enabling a unified OS across multiple network layers and creating a harmonized network environment. This strategy elevates performance, supports sustainability goals, and optimizes the network’s Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) through improved cost efficiency.    

The Edgecore ECS5550-54X and ECS5550-30X models feature either 48 or 24 10GbE SFP+ ports and 6 100GbE uplinks, providing robust bandwidth to meet the demands of high-traffic network environments. They support both traditional three-tier aggregation or core topologies and modern folded-Clos architectures without over-subscription. 

The ECS5550 series, combined with SONiC Lite, is equipped with a comprehensive set of features designed to provide high availability, security, and efficient management, delivering advanced IPv6 management, security protocols, Quality of Service (QoS), etc. Ideal for cost-efficient scalability, the solution offers a great balance of performance and affordability with a 10 Gigabit Ethernet aggregation switch and 100G uplinks. Management options are available through CLI and SNMPv1/v2/v3. Additionally, the solution integrates with OLS uCentral, allowing seamless cloud-based management via a CloudSDK-based controller – streamlining operations and providing centralized control for network administrators.
